Skills and Strategies for the Child Care Teacher

Child Care Foundational Training

Revised in 2024, this Child Care Foundational Training will prepare individuals to be successful in the role of a lead childcare teacher in a child care setting. This will be accomplished by thoroughly examining the subjects of curriculum planning and activity selection in a developmentally appropriate early childhood environment.

Additional topics to be covered include exploring strategies to involve parents and the role of observation in a developmentally appropriate program. Child guidance and professionalism are also further developed.

This course fulfills one of the introductory noncredit course requirements as specified in the Department of Children and Families (DCF) 251 Licensing Rules for Group Child Centers.

Hours/Credits/CEUs

DCF requires15.00 Hours of face-to-face time (which could be online via zoom and or by a face-to-face time at a local classroom. This will be specified by your instructor prior to enrolling in the class.

An additional 35.00 Hours of required time for modules to be completed by students are a must. The modules will be monitored by the instructor throughout the course.

This Course Level is Tier 3 and requires a total of 50 hours for completion.

Content Areas: 1. Child Development, Family Systems and Dynamics, Diversity, Special Needs, Disabilities, and Inclusive Practices Learning Experiences, Strategies, and Curriculum, Health, Safety, and Nutrition, Guidance and Nurturing, Observation, Screening, and Assessment, Family and Community Relationships, Professionalism, Planning, Reflection, and Evaluation, Administration and Management – General, Administration and Management - Personnel.

Participants will demonstrate understanding of the course competencies and learning objectives through active participation in activities, discussions, and presentations. Each Foundational Training has a set of required activities. These activities provide continuity and consistency in outcomes for the participants. Each required activity has specific completion criteria. Course quizzes are designed to reflect information from each module. Quizzes reflect Wisconsin DCF Regulatory information needed in performing daily care for children. Quizzes also reflect information regarding the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS) as it relates to practices for relationship-based practices and the Teaching Cycle. Knowledge of support for childcare professionals is also reflected in each quiz. In addition, this course has the following project, experience-based assessments: Observe a Program in Action, How to Design Your Ideal Classroom which allow participants to demonstrate learning for multiple objectives in hands-on capstone activities.

Course Category: Early Childhood that applies toward, (after completing this course) students being qualified to work in a Group Childcare Center as a Lead Teacher.
